Welcome! I am Idaho House Democratic Leader, Rep. Mat Erpelding. I am working to improve the lives of every Idahoan. I believe Idahoans deserve better schools, more security for their families, and a better quality of life. I am committed to protecting our public lands, advocating for our schools, and creating an economy that works for everyone.
A mountaineer at heart, I moved to Pocatello, Idaho in 1993 to attend Idaho State University. Now, I live with my wife, Elizabeth, and our daughter, Louise, in Boise near Camel’s Back Park. I am a small business owner, outfitter, educator, and retired high-altitude mountain guide.
Previously, I trained new teachers at the College of Western Idaho how to use experiential education in the classroom. And, as a young professional, I worked at several colleges and universities including Boise State University, California State University, Chico, The Evergreen State College, and Texas Tech University.
My heart is in the mountains. I enjoyed many years as a high-altitude mountain guide, and have reached the summit of Denali (20,320 ft) four out of five attempts while helping more than 20 clients to achieve their goal of standing on top of North America.
My passion for the wilderness and the unique experiences it offers has solidified my view that civic engagement is essential to living in our community.
I am a Past President of the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education and was awarded the Wilderness Education Association’s Instructor of the year award in 2010. I am a passionate and dedicated leader committed to making a difference in every organization I work in, and I am a strong advocate for District 19 in the House of Representatives.
